| The Adolescent Medicine Program is a program, run under the auspices of the Department of Pediatrics, intending to meet the special needs of teenagers. Depending on the individual case, treatment for adolescents is provided by an interdisciplinary team including pediatricians, psychiatrists, obstetric-gynecologists, social workers, nurses, recreation therapists and educators.
This center of excellence provides comprehensive care and includes:
1) An inpatient unit serving patients between the ages of 12 and 21. The unit will focus on the medical conditions typical to this age group, including Sickle-Cell Anemia, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, eating disorders, and gynecology. Dr. St.Victor, Director of the Division of Adolescent Medicine, along with Dr. Elliott, has expertise in treating patients with anorexia nervosa, bulimia and adolescent gynecology. Any teen requiring hospitalization at Brookdale will be admitted to this unit.
This unit provides an environment that serves the special needs of adolescents--a time of unparalleled physical and emotional maturation. The unit will include a number of special components designed to help adolescents on the road to recovery. A recreational therapist will guide patients on the safest and healthiest ways to exercise during their stay. A teaching module will assure that they do not fall behind on school work while in the hospital. In addition, the entire nursing staff is trained in the care of adolescents.
2) An ambulatory adolescent clinic.
3) An AMP program for adjudicated delinquents.
4) A special obstetrics/gynecology service strictly for teenagers.
