Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center has a multidisciplinary, patient-centered approach to the detection and treatment of breast cancer. Brookdale’s Breast Health Services promotes early detection of Breast Cancer, and if diagnosed, provides appropriate medical care with a comprehensive approach to treatment and emotional support.
Local residents don’t have to travel far from their homes to receive the level of care provided at Brookdale. Not only are breast cancer critical services provided in one convenient and familiar location including radiation therapy, but the initiative includes inspiration and hope for patients.
A “Look Good….Feel Better” group program, sponsored by the American Cancer Society makes quarterly presentations for members of the community who wish to participate. This program teaches beauty techniques to women who are receiving treatment for cancer to help them combat the appearance related side effects of cancer treatment.
Another component of the program is the Cancer Support Group. The meetings are held bi-weekly on alternate Thursdays from 1 to 2 pm in Room 220 of the Snapper Pavilion at Brookdale. The group’s main focus is to link people who have been recently diagnosed with long-term survivors of cancer. These encounters are informational as well as comforting to people in their time of need.
Brookdale’s Breast Services is part of the Brooklyn Breast Health Partnership that enables women who do not qualify for Medicaid to obtain diagnostic and treatment services for breast cancer despite the fact that they do not have insurance. |
