Welcome to the Bruner Developmental Disabilities Center at
Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center.

The Bruner Developmental Disabilities Center (BDDC) is staffed by Board-Certified physicians and a team of trained and highly skilled nurses. The Center is part of the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at Brookdale University Hospital and offers diagnostic and treatment services to children up to 21 years old with possible or known developmental disabilities including:

  • Speech and language problems
  • Learning disabilities
  • Gait difficulties
  • Incoordination
  • Behavioral and attention problems
  • Mental retardation
  • Autism

Diagnostic evaluations at BDDC utilize a team approach. Results of the multidisciplinary evaluations are discussed at team conferences and shared with parents. With consent, reports may be sent to schools, physicians, or parents themselves. Outpatient treatments include:

  • Speech and language therapy
  • Educational intervention
  • Counseling and psychotherapy
  • On-going follow-up by medical staff from developmental pediatrics, pediatric neurology and psychiatry

Medicaid, managed care and all insurances are accepted.

The Early Intervention Program is an interactive parent-child educational program for families and children under 3 years of age with suspected developmental delays or behavioral problems. Parents are encouraged to attend school with their infants. Toddlers may be bussed to the center with or without parents.

The evaluation and treatment is free, fully funded by New York State.

  • Early educational intervention
  • Feeding, speech and language therapy
  • Play therapy
  • Social services, parent group sessions
  • Medical consultants available
  • Free transportation

The Preschool Program is for 3 to 5 year olds. We provide small classes with specialized teaching, speech, physical and occupational therapy, or play therapy.

The multidisciplinary evaluation and programs are free under the auspices of the Committee for Preschool Education. Free transportation is provided.
