Dr. Sarita Dhuper
Director Child Obesity and Weight Control

The Live Light…Live Right program is staffed by a team of Board-Certified physicians and a team of highly trained and skilled nurses, ancillary staff and many volunteers that have joined forces to combat the epidemic of pediatric obesity.

The mission of the Live Light …. Live Right program is to empower children and their families with the “knowledge and support” to help them make healthy choices in food and fitness for a lifetime

The program has led to the establishment of The Brookdale Community Partnership (BCP), a multidisciplinary care coordination program. The program is a collaboration of the Departments of Pediatric Adolescent Medicine, Pediatrics, the Brookdale Family Care Centers and community-based organizations including:

  • Caribbean Women’s Health Association
  • Brookdale Family Care Centers
  • Flatbush YMCA
  • New York City Parks and Recreation
  • New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA)
  • New York City Board of Education:( 5 & 6)
  • Brooklyn Public Library, PAL, Head Start
  • Brooklyn Task Force on Food & Fitness
  • Downstart weight loss program

Services of the Live Light … Live Right Program include:

  • Outreach, screening and identification of overweight children
  • Referral to the multidisciplinary program
  • Individual nutritional counseling
  • Care coordination
  • Community education
  • Education of community physicians
  • Structured free or subsidized physical activity programs
  • Parent/patient education and support groups
  • Advocacy and policy changes

More than 1000 children have been evaluated and followed through this program. Fifty percent of the children attending the program for an average period of 1.5 years show a decline in their Body Mass Index measures and a decrease in their blood pressure, cholesterol, and insulin measures. The children and their families have made significant changes in their choices in food and are leading a more active lifestyle. We hope they will continue to follow these lifestyle changes as they grow into adults and teach the same to their children.
