Welcome to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center.

Dr. Myron Sokal
Director

Brookdale has 30 bassinets in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), which is a Level III unit, fully equipped and staffed by perinatal specialists, and serves as a designated tertiary referral center for New York City.

In the event that a baby born at Brookdale has a medical problem or needs special care, he or she will be moved to our state-of-the-art NICU, where the baby will receive the most modern methods of care.  Our NICU is one of the most advanced of its kind in the city.

If you're baby has been moved to the NICU, we know that you are frightened about your baby's future and worried about how you will eventually be able to take care of an infant who is so sick.  You may even be thinking that this is too much for you, that you can't manage.

But you can.

What is important for you to know now is that there are many, many other parents just like you who have learned how to take care of babies just like yours.  Our healthcare team will help show you how, just as we showed them.  And other parents will help you, too, when you join our parents' groups. Your baby is being cared for by a team of doctors and nurses who are all specialists in caring for sick newborns.

The team also includes a staff of specially trained physicians, nurses, physical therapists, respiratory therapists, x-ray technicians, nurse educators, social workers, a lactation consultant (who teaches mothers the best ways to breastfeed) and other consultants.  Every member of the team is willing to work closely with you to help you care for your child.

There is also a support group for parents of children in the NICU.
