Mary Baldauf, MD, MS, FAAP. FCCP
Chief, Pediatric Critical Care Medicine

The Division of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine is staffed by two full-time Pediatric Intensivists, a full-time Pediatric Intensivist / Pediatric Pulmonologist and a team of highly skilled and trained nurses. The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit is a 6-bedded, state-of-the art facility that includes a specialized negative-pressure isolation room. The Pediatric Intensivists work closely with specialized Pediatric Physicians, Critical Care Nurses, Patient Care Associates, Respiratory Therapists, Pharmacists, Social Workers and other sub-specialists to provide cutting edge therapies for critically ill or injured patients from newborn to 18 years of age.

More than 300 children are admitted to the Pediatric ICU every year, and are treated with high-tech therapies including Inhaled Nitric Oxide, High Frequency Oscillatory Mechanical Ventilation, Prone Patient Positioning, Peritoneal Dialysis, Hemodialysis, Plasmapheresis / Leukopheresis, Intracranial Pressure Monitoring, Craniectomy, Hyperbaric Oxygen, Intravenous Gamma Globulin, Intravenous Terbutaline, and Inhaled Heliox, among others. Continuous Veno-Venous Hemofiltration with Dialysis (CVVH-D) is on the horizon for children who cannot tolerate traditional hemodialysis.

The Division has a fully computerized, life-like simulated baby to train Residents in the skills and techniques of pediatric resuscitation.

The staff of the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit is intimately involved in Community Pediatrics, and their Violence Prevention Initiative has led to a unique relationship with the Big Brothers / Big Sisters of New York City ( East New York center). Together, the groups have established a unique “Mentoring Thru Medicine” program based at Brookdale Hospital, wherein Pediatric Physicians, Nurses and staff are directly mentoring teens in the Brownsville and East New York neighborhoods.
