At The Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center, we take particular pride in how we treat children.  Brookdale's Department of Pediatrics enjoys an excellent reputation and provides a wide range of comprehensive health services, including 25 pediatric specialty clinics. Here is a selection of other important services available within the Pediatric Department and via other medical departments:

Adolescent Health Services
Full-service program, including specialists in adolescent care, a gynecology service strictly for teenagers, an adolescent inpatient unit, and nationally recognized physicians who treat eating disorders.

Allergy& Immunology
Treatment for children, infants though adolescents, afflicted by allergies and evaluation and treatment of patients with recurrent infections, for possible immunodeficiencies.

Asthma and Pulmonary Disease

The Brookdale Family Care Centers
General pediatric services are now available at six primary care satellite offices in the community.  Preventive care and continuity of care are emphasized.

Bruner Developmental Disabilities Center
For children through age 18 with known or suspected developmental disabilities.  Both infant and pre-school programs are available.

Cardiology
Consultation, specialty clinics, office follow-ups and diagnostic techniques such as EKG, echocardiography and pediatric stress tests. To fight the obesity epidemic in children, we have established a community based partnership, the Live Light - Live Right program.

Child Obesity and Weight Control
The Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center and the Brookdale Family Care Centers have taken a lead role in solving the problem of childhood obesity by establishing the " Live Light - Live Right" Program. (718) 240-8125

Critical Care
A 6-bed Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), located on the Pediatric floor, cares for children in need of intensive, acute care.

Dental
Complete  pediatric dental care, diagnostic and preventive, including orthodontia.

Emergency Services
A full range of emergency services including a Level I Trauma Center and a separate Pediatric Suite.

Endocrinology
Treatment of problems related to growth and development, diabetes, thyroid conditions and nutritional well-being.

Routine exams, treatment and eyeglass prescriptions as well as surgical and laser procedures.

Gastrointestinal, hepatic and nutritional disorders are treated.

Genetic Counseling
Sophisticated services, including amniocentesis, sonography, blood and bone marrow chromosome analysis, and prenatal testing for Sickle-Cell Anemia , Tay Sachs and Gauchers Disease

Hematology/Oncology
Diagnosis and treatment of blood disorders such as anemia, Sickle-Cell disease and bleeding disorders as well as all types of childhood cancers.

Infectious Diseases
Assessment, consultation, treatment and monitoring for children who suffer recurrent and/or serious infections, including meningitis, bone and joint infections, tuberculosis and pediatric HIV-related complications . (718) 240-5880

Mental Health Services
Full range of child and adolescent outpatient and inpatient services, a partial hospitalization program for children, a family support services advocate and a counseling program for adolescents regarding HIV and substance abuse issues.

Neonatal/Perinatal Medicine
A Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit with 30 bassinets, fully equipped and staffed by perinatal specialists.  A designated tertiary referral center for New York City.

Treatment of hypertension, urinary tract infections and other kidney disorders.

Toys 'R' Us Playroom
A 650-square-foot playroom, staffed by a play therapist and located on the Pediatric floor, is beautifully renovated and stocked with toys thanks to the generosity of the giant national retailer.

Neurology
Treatment of neurological impairments, including epilepsy, tumors, headaches, neuromuscular disorders and head trauma. (718) 240-5649

The Pediatric Parents Advisory Board
Established in the Spring of 1997 to bring together parents of chronically ill children with pediatric staff and administrators to discuss ways of enhancing care and Brookdale's pediatric environment for children and their families.

Speech, Language and Hearing
Evaluation and treatment of speech, language, feeding, swallowing and hearing disorders for children of all ages, including infants.
