Qazi Halim, M.S., R.Ph.
Director Department of Pharmacy

The Department of Pharmacy at Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center provides the highest quality pharmaceutical care and pharmaceutical services to its patients. Brookdale’s pharmacy was one of the first hospital pharmacies to provide services 24 hours/day, seven days per week, decentralized clinical services to patients and to implement unit dose distribution, clinical monitoring of drug therapy, a drug information service, and sterile intravenous solution preparation.

Informatics is extensively used in the distribution of medication including profile interface between the pharmacy information system and unit-based automated dispensing machines, cartless unit-dose distribution, and extensive unit-dose packaging and cart preparation for long term care patients.

The sterile products area provides the following services to all in-patients: an IV admixture service; total parenteral nutrition for adults, pediatrics and neonates; and chemotherapy for in-patients and ambulatory patients.

Clinical pharmacy programs include an anticoagulation specialist who monitors patients on anticoagulant therapy, an infectious diseases specialist who oversees the Antimicrobial Stewardship Program, an ambulatory care specialist who manages two specialty clinics, Anticoagulation Clinic and HIV Clinic, a critical care specialist who monitors patients in the medical ICU, a team of three internal medicine specialist who monitor general medicine patients, and an HIV specialist who provides clinical services to the HIV inpatients.

With an ASHP accredited pharmacy residency program (post graduate year one), two residents have the opportunity to train for one year. In addition, with an ACPE accredited continuing education program, staff, students, and residents have the opportunity to train and learn.

With its affiliation with Long Island University’s Arnold and Marie Schwartz College of Pharmacy, three faculty members (a drug information specialist, a critical care specialist and an ambulatory care specialist) are on site and provide an academic setting for students and residents to receive experiential training and for pharmacy staff to serve as preceptors in experiential training for students.

The Drug Information Service provides hospital staff and patients with the opportunity to have up to date drug information and clinical literature and also provides students and residents the setting to learn by responding to drug information questions and evaluating clinical literature.

Essential to patient safety, the patients and hospital staff benefit with pharmacy initiatives such as medication safety awareness programs, focused patient education sessions and staff development in several areas such as insulin management, anticoagulation, antimicrobials, and medication safety.

An on-site retail pharmacy provides prescription services to discharged patients, emergency department patients and clinic patients.
