Department of Medical Education
The Department of Medical Education is responsible for Undergraduate Medical Education and Graduate Medical Education. House staff should be aware that Medical Education is responsible for the following functions:
- Prepares house staff contracts
- Assists in obtaining visas and immigration paperwork
- Coordinates payroll and other benefits including malpractice coverage.
- Coordinates issuing of pagers, uniforms, parking and housing.
- Conducts house staff orientation.
- Maintains credential files, including1-9 forms, verifies residencies and employment, and completes licensure and other forms.
- Coordinates mandatory certification courses.
- Issues diplomas and conducts graduation ceremony.
- Coordinates access to Hospital Information Systems.
- Coordinates and tracks annual house staff evaluations.
- Schedules conference rooms and classrooms.
- Acts as house staff advocate, in conjunction with CIR.
- Tracks compliance with Employee Health requirements.
- Develops and maintains House Staff Manual.
Institutional responsibilities relating to house staff education:
- Coordinates and participates in all internal reviews.
- Develops GME policies.
- Assists in preparation for RRC visits.
- Complete Institutional Review Document.
- Coordinates affiliations.
Purpose of Graduate Medical Education (GME)
The purpose of GME is to provide an organized educational program with guidance and supervision of the resident, facilitating the resident’s ethical, professional and personal development while ensuring safe and appropriate care for patients.

Anesthesiology
The Department of Anesthesiology offers a four-year residency training program approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, providing comprehensive training in all aspects of anesthesiology.
Dental/Oral Surgery
The Department of Dental and Oral Surgery offers a two-year residency training program in General Practice and a two-year residency training program in Pediatric Dentistry, leading to board eligibility. Fellowship programs in Oral Implantology and Dental Anesthesiology are available.
Medicine
The Department of Internal Medicine offers a three-year residency in Primary Care Internal Medicine and a one-year preliminary program for those going on to specialty training. Both programs are fully approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.
Pediatrics
The Department of Pediatrics offers a three-year residency in primary care pediatrics that meets all requirements for certification by the American Board of Pediatrics.
Psychiatry
The Department of Psychiatry offers a four-year General Psychiatry Residency Training Program and a two-year Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Residency Training Program, both fully approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.
Psychology
The Psychology Division of the Department of Psychiatry at Brookdale University Hospital Medical Center offers a twelve-month, full time (35 hours), APA approved, pre-doctoral internship in clinical psychology. This program is available to matriculated doctoral students in clinical, counseling and school psychology programs who have met their school's eligibility requirements for internship.
Surgical Services
The Department of Surgical Services offers a five-year residency program in General Surgery that fulfills training requirements for certification by the American Board of Surgery.
Urology
The Department of Urology offers a fully accredited, four-year training program in Urology. Two years of training in general surgery are required for admission to the program. |
