Midwifery is a health care profession in which providers offer care to childbearing women during pregnancy, labour and birth, and during the postpartum period. They also help care for the newborn and assist the mother with breastfeeding.
In earlier era's, a woman in medicine was unusual. Today, many patients seek female doctors, especially when they're picking an obstetrician/gynecologist. "The physician's gender says nothing about his or her ability," says Dr. Mark Spitzer, Chairman, Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology. "However, many women feel more comfortable with a female OB/GYN." Brookdale has more than half a dozen fine female OB/GYNs to choose from.
"Brookdale also has several midwives in private practice," says Dr. Spitzer. A certified nurse-midwife (CNM) is educated in both nursing and midwifery, is licensed by New York State, and has passed accrediting examinations.
Brookdale midwives conduct prenatal visits, deliver babies, and follow with postpartum care. If there are complications, we are always backed up by Brookdale physicians.
"Midwives handle well-woman gynecological care, as well, including routine pap exams and birth control," says Dr. Spitzer. In fact, Brookdale midwives see women of all ages.
Interested in the midwifery practice? Only feel comfortable with a female physician? Don't care if your OB/GYN is a man or a woman, as long as the doctor is kind and capable, and the facility is convenient and attractive?
