Anatomic Pathology

The Department of Anatomic Pathology and The Clinical Laboratory offer a full range of
diagnostic services in anatomic pathology and in clinical pathology (laboratory medicine) for both
hospitalized patients as well as out-patients.  These services apply to all diseases and all ages.  In
Anatomic Pathology, diagnoses rendered by the pathologists are based on a thorough examination
of tissues and cells in bodily fluids sent for analysis. In the Clinical Laboratory, test results on blood
and other bodily fluids and tissues are used for general health care treatment, primary diagnosis
and management of disease.
Department of Anatomic Pathology
The Department of Anatomic Pathology at Brookdale Hospital & Medical Center is accredited by
the NYS Department of Health and College of American Pathologists (CAP).  In conformity with
regulations, programs are in place for in-servicing, continuing education, and competency of the
doctors, and technologists throughout the laboratory.  Standards of practice are determined by
regulations from these governing agencies as well as the College of American Pathologists, ASCP,
AABB, AACC, NYSED and the Academy of Pathology.
In Anatomic Pathology, over 8,000 surgical specimens are examined annually, and autopsies are performed.  In Cytology, over 5,000 specimens are processed annually.  This includes PAP smears for women’s health, and cancer screening.  Diagnostic fine needle aspirations are also performed.  The Anatomic Pathology office is open from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.  A staff pathologist is on-call during hours when the office is closed, including weekends.
Clinical Laboratory
The Clinical Laboratory, which operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, performs more than 2 million individual tests annually on inpatients and outpatients, and offers a full range of diagnostic services in laboratory medicine.  The Clinical Laboratory includes Chemistry, Hematology, Microbiology, Mycobacteriology, Mycology, Parasitology, Immunology, and Blood Banking.  A phlebotomy team supports the acquisition of specimens for the department.  Decentralized (point of care, waived) testing has been established hospital-wide for bedside glucose monitoring and locally for other analytes such as HIV, urine glucose and protein, and pregnancy testing.
